Hypocrisy of Democracy

By Hasaka Ratnamalala

While sitting in front of my pc listening to Batticloa election results through “Lakhanda” web cast, I looked at BBC world news on television, women wearing nice looking saris going to polling stations. It is the election people in East had in 15 years. Normally a true democrat would say, “What a marvelous thing is happening”. Unfortunately it is not the case with Sri Lanka.

For some reason Sri Lanka has been an international pariah for a long time. Each and every thing Sri Lanka do for democracy doesn’t even get close to some unknown measure stick on the eyes of westerners, NGO merchants and Media.

First, months before polls media starts firing articles about a “Ballot with Bullets!” and then UNP joined with TNA started to preach about an “Unholy alliance”, just without looking at themselves on the mirror. UNP just forget what they did with LTTE just to get them into democracy. But they failed because LTTE never ready for democracy but when Karuna and the boys came out for democracy why they don’t let them. If a warlord came out in Afghanistan or in Iraq and start supporting allied forces it is international news and a step forward towards democracy. Why not with Karuna and the boys? Of course no one can expect these young men who spent most of their child life with weapons would put their arms on the ground overnight. But can’t we listen what they are saying. There is a real threat for their lives from LTTE. And don’t you think they listen to us, by helping to hold mini polls without any major incident. This is the “Hypocrisy of Democracy”.

In Sri Lanka there is too much freedom to Media, Western countries and NGOs to the level they can easily scrutinized the Government preventing its mandate of securing its boarders. In western countries Media, NGOs has their demarcation point at the national security. Even it is ok to attack other countries on the sake of National security. Unfortunately Sri Lanka cannot even protect its boundaries. Indian fishermen crossing our boundaries have become a day today activity, but when SLNavy arrests them it is a very wrong thing. The other day when an LTTE arms dealer arrested in Colombo it was a “disappearance of a Tamil” to Media and NGOs. Isn’t this the “Hypocrisy of democracy”?
